You've spent weeks writing, illustrating, and formatting your book. You head over to KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) to upload your manuscript — and then you see this frustrating yellow warning:

"Books with the interior, paper type, and trim size you chose are ineligible for Expanded Distribution."

If you've landed here, you're not alone. This is one of the most common errors self-publishing authors encounter on KDP. The good news? It's completely fixable once you understand what's causing it.

What Does This Warning Actually Mean?

KDP's Expanded Distribution program lets your book reach retailers, libraries, and distributors beyond Amazon — places like bookstores, online retailers, and academic institutions. It's a powerful feature, but it comes with strict eligibility requirements.

When KDP shows this warning, it means one or more of your current settings — your trim size, paper type, or interior type — don't meet those requirements.

The Most Common Culprit: Non-Standard Trim Size

This is the #1 reason authors hit this error.

KDP divides trim sizes into two categories:

Standard Trim Sizes (Expanded Distribution eligible):

  1. 6.00 × 9.00 in
  2. 5.00 × 8.00 in
  3. 5.25 × 8.00 in
  4. 5.50 × 8.50 in
  5. 5.06 × 7.81 in
  6. 6.14 × 9.21 in
  7. 6.69 × 9.61 in
  8. 7.00 × 10.00 in
  9. 7.44 × 9.69 in
  10. 7.50 × 9.25 in
  11. 8.00 × 10.00 in
  12. 8.50 × 11.00 in

Non-Standard Trim Sizes (NOT eligible for Expanded Distribution):

  1. 8.25 × 6.00 in ← this is a very popular children's book size!
  2. 8.25 × 8.25 in
  3. 8.50 × 8.50 in
  4. Any Custom size

If you've chosen a square or landscape format for your children's picture book — like the popular 8.25 × 6.00 in — you will always see this warning. KDP simply does not support Expanded Distribution for these sizes.

Other Reasons You Might See This Error

Even with a standard trim size, Expanded Distribution can be blocked if:

  1. Interior type is Color — Color printing is not supported for Expanded Distribution. Only black & white or grayscale interiors qualify.
  2. Paper type is Premium Color — Similar to above; premium color paper is excluded.
  3. Your book is a hardcover — Hardcovers are not eligible for Expanded Distribution at all.

What Should You Do?

Option 1: Switch to a Standard Trim Size

If getting wide distribution matters to you, redesign your book to fit a standard KDP trim size. For children's books, 8.50 × 11.00 in or 7.50 × 9.25 in are popular alternatives that are Expanded Distribution eligible.

⚠️ This means reformatting all your pages and possibly resizing your illustrations — which is a significant undertaking. Plan for this early, before your book is fully designed.

Option 2: Accept the Limitation and Sell Only on Amazon

If you've chosen a size like 8.25 × 6.00 in because it's the right fit for your book's visual design, that's a valid creative decision. Your book will still be available on Amazon — both in paperback and as a Kindle eBook. You simply won't have access to the Expanded Distribution network.

Many successful independent children's book authors sell exclusively on Amazon and do very well.

Option 3: Use a Separate Distributor for Wide Distribution

If you want both your preferred trim size AND wide distribution, consider publishing through a second platform like IngramSpark. IngramSpark supports a broader range of trim sizes and has its own extensive distribution network. You can upload your Amazon edition to KDP and your wide-distribution edition to IngramSpark simultaneously.

A Special Note for Children's Book Authors

Children's picture books almost always use non-standard trim sizes — square formats, landscape layouts, and wide pages are part of what makes them visually appealing. This means the Expanded Distribution warning is extremely common in this category.

At Kidillus, we work with children's book creators every day, and we always discuss trim size implications upfront during the formatting process. Choosing your trim size is one of the most important decisions you'll make — it affects:

  1. Print cost per unit
  2. Distribution eligibility
  3. How your illustrations look on the page
  4. Reader experience

If you're unsure which trim size is right for your book, our team can help you think through the trade-offs before you commit to a layout.
