What Is Spine Width and How Is It Calculated?

The spine is the narrow band on the side of the book that connects the front and back covers. Its width is determined by multiplying your total page count by the thickness of a single sheet of paper — which varies by paper type.

Amazon KDP uses these standard thickness values per page:

Paper Type Thickness per Page Example: 200 pages Example: 300 pages
Black & White 0.002252″ 0.450″ 0.676″
Standard Color 0.002252″ 0.450″ 0.676″
Premium Color 0.002347″ 0.469″ 0.704″
Hardcover (Premium Color) 0.0047125″ 0.943″ 1.414″

KDP will only print text on the spine if it is at least 0.0625 inches wide (approximately 32 pages for most paper types). Below that threshold the spine is left blank. This calculator applies the 0.062″ safe margin automatically.

What Is Bleed in a Book Cover?

Bleed is the strip of extra artwork that extends beyond the finished trim size. When KDP cuts the printed sheets to the final book size, the cut is never perfectly precise — it can land slightly inside or outside the intended line. Bleed ensures that no white paper edge is visible even if the cut drifts by a fraction of a millimeter.

KDP requires 0.125 inches of bleed on all four sides of a paperback cover. Any background color, image, or pattern that reaches the edge of the cover must extend into the bleed zone. Elements you do not want cut off (text, logos, key artwork) must stay inside the safe area — at least 0.125 inches from the trim edge.

Hardcover vs Paperback — What Is Different in the Template?

KDP hardcovers (case laminate) require a larger template than paperbacks because the printed wrap folds over the boards of the cover. This adds extra measurements to account for:

Measurement Paperback Hardcover
Edge margin 0.125″ bleed 0.591″ wrap
Inner hinge None 0.394″ hinge
Board overhang None 0.197″ W · 0.236″ H
Minimum pages 24 32

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Amazon KDP reject my cover file?

The most common reasons are: the spine is too wide or too narrow for the page count, the bleed is missing or incorrect, text extends outside the safe zone, or the file resolution is below 300 DPI. Generating a fresh template here every time you change your page count will prevent most of these errors.

Do I need to add bleed to the front cover only, or all sides?

All four sides need bleed for both the front and back cover. The full cover template this tool generates already includes bleed on all sides — your artwork simply needs to fill the entire template including the pink border.

Can I use this template with Canva, Photoshop, or InDesign?

Yes. Download the SVG and open it in Adobe Illustrator or Affinity Publisher to use it as a template layer. For Canva Pro, import the SVG as a template guide. Photoshop users can open the SVG at 300 DPI, or use the downloaded dimensions to create a custom document at the correct size.

What DPI should my KDP cover be?

Amazon KDP requires a minimum of 300 DPI at the final print size. If your cover is 14 × 9 inches, the pixel dimensions must be at least 4,200 × 2,700 px. The SVG from this tool is vector-based and resolution-independent, but any raster artwork you place inside your design must be at 300 DPI.

Can I use this template for IngramSpark?

IngramSpark uses similar but not identical thickness values for spine calculation. This tool is calibrated for Amazon KDP specifically. For IngramSpark, use their own cover template generator to confirm the final dimensions before printing.

Disclaimer: Kidillus provides this tool free as a resource for authors. While the calculations match Amazon KDP's published specifications, spine width is an estimate — slight variations can occur during printing. Always order a proof copy and verify the physical spine before printing in bulk.
