The author wanted to create a playful children’s story about Lelato, a duck who accidentally ends up at Grandma’s house and becomes part of the family. The story explores themes of fear, kindness, care, trust, and finding a safe place to belong.
I created a colorful, story-driven illustration style with expressive animal and human characters. Lelato, Grandma, the child, and the supporting animals were designed with distinct personalities and clear facial expressions to make the story easy for young readers to follow.
I illustrated the complete story, including the characters, home and outdoor environments, animal interactions, and key moments of Lelato’s journey. I also designed the front cover and integrated the Portuguese story text into the interior pages while maintaining a consistent visual style throughout the book.
The completed project included custom character illustrations, detailed story scenes, front cover design, and formatted interior pages. I created and designed both the English and Portuguese versions of the book, adapting the interior layouts and text placement for each language while maintaining the same visual style and consistency throughout.
The final books combine a colorful, child-friendly illustration style with an engaging story about compassion, courage, family, trust, and giving an unexpected visitor a place to belong.
