The client came with a fully written children’s picture book about Mateo, a young boy growing up between two cultures. The story explores his everyday experiences at school and home, including moments with friends, family, lunch, and soccer. The main challenge was to visually communicate Mateo’s emotions and help young readers connect with his experience of feeling different while finding confidence in who he is.
We developed the book in a warm watercolor style with a subtle vintage/retro feel, creating expressive characters and colorful environments suitable for children ages 5–9. Special attention was given to Mateo’s expressions, body language, cultural details, and the relationships between the characters so that the illustrations supported the emotional story on every page. The artwork was developed through close collaboration with the author, with feedback and revisions incorporated throughout the process.
The completed project delivered a fully illustrated children’s picture book with engaging watercolor artwork across the story. The illustrations were created to complement the manuscript while making Mateo’s emotions, relationships, and experiences easy for young readers to understand. The project was completed over approximately one month, with the author closely involved throughout the creative process. The final result was a polished, cohesive picture book that the client was extremely happy and proud of.
